adobo magazine | 30 October 2020

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – There’s a new creative hub in the neighborhood with the launch of the adidas Greenbelt 5 store this October. True to the neighborhood stores’ concept of embodying the neighborhood it’s in, the new store features design elements that are uniquely Filipino.

Combining creativity with culture, toy designer and partner Creator Quiccs created murals that depict the street style of adidas combined with Filipino elements such as the vinta, rattan, and the Philippine flag. The lounge area also features an exclusively designed carpet by Graffiti artist Mark Barretto as its centerpiece. Additionally, Barretto also provided limited edition tote bags that were given to the first 500 customers of the store.

The Art of Unfamiliarity - By Mark Barretto

Roaa Elbagoury | VICTOR Magazine I 26 July 2021

The more you look at it, the harder it is for you to determine and deduct what that unique piece of work is meant to represent. Thick, thin and twirly lines that are oh so intricate, accompanied with an array of bold colours that are meant to set the ball rolling, that painting you are staring could mean anything. To some, the twirls could mean the injustice that is taking place worldwide. To some, the colours could represent harmony while the remaining percentage view it as a sense of serenity, making them forget the problems that were initially occupied in their minds.

His artwork has been a part of numerous international exhibitions and art festivals in different parts of the globe, that is the power Mark Barretto’s art possesses. Known for his works in the streets as Defs and having established himself in the mid-2000’s, Mark’s inspirations emerge from places where he is currently at, largely influenced by street culture and contemporary urban conditions. He further aims to reflect his views on unfamiliarity and identity in an artistic manner, a lot of them based on his experiences.

Sculptural paintings by Dubai, UAE-based artist Mark Barretto: “His paintings, installations and other works are largely influenced by street culture and contemporary urban conditions, mostly seen in a build-up of images lifted from things he finds around showing distinct attributes that identifies his surroundings. He takes inspirations from places where he is currently at and reflects his views on unfamiliarity, identity and adaptation relating to his experiences as a migrant moving to the Middle East in 2007, assimilating present influences and occurrences that shaped his works.”
